Ever come into our barn or go to a fair and notice most of the animals have tags in their ears? We call it ear piercing day when we place ear tags in the lamb’s ears. We keep terms pretty simple in our barn and I always told the kids the lambs were old enough to get their pierce pierced. This of course raised the question when can I get my ears pierced mom! Now that they have gotten older they understand we have a reason for putting tags in the lambs ears. Each lamb on our farm has two ear tags actually. We have a flock scrapie tag that is our farm identification number. This is required to be in place when a sheep or lamb leaves our farm. It’s a national farm tracking number so no matter where that lamb goes everyone knows it came from our farm and knows we are scrapie free. In addition we place another tag that is color coded based on the ram the ewe came from, so who her daddy is.
It takes some strength to squeeze the Ear tag gun and Campbell has finally gotten nearly strong enough to tag with some help from Grampy and mom.
